All young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation, and is central to meeting the government’s ambitions for a world-class education system.
At Askern Littlemoor Infant Academy, we believe PE & Sports plays an important part in making our vision a reality for every pupil, with the potential to change young people’s lives for the better.
Physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression), and children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.
What is the Sports Premium?
The government provides additional funding to improve the provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. The money is provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport. It can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools. We will be held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support pupils' progress and participation in PE and school sport. We are required to publish online information about how we have used the additional funding, including details about our sporting provision alongside curriculum details. This will ensure that parents / carers and others are made fully aware of the PE and sporting provision at Askern Littlemoor Infant Academy.
This additional funding for schools and the amount is calculated by the number of primary aged pupils (between the ages of 5 and 11) at the annual census in January. All schools with 17 or more primary aged pupils receive a lump sum of £16,000 plus an additional payment of £10 per pupil. For Askern Littlemoor Infant Academy this equates to £16,950 for the school year 2023-2024.
How schools must use the Sports Premium
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of their physical education (PE), physical activity and sport they offer.
This means that the premium should be used to:
• develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport that the school provides • build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.
For example, the funding could be used to:
The premium must be spent by schools on making additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport for the benefit of all pupils to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.
