The national curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences. (DFE Programme of Study)

• Teaching children to write as well as possible produces advantages for the individual.
• It will allow for effective written communication for a range of different audiences and purposes.
• Crucially, being unable to write significantly narrows the range of work and life opportunities a person can access.

Pupils need secure knowledge of English grammar for composition. This enables them to express themselves clearly and creatively through writing. The grammatical structures of a text carry much of the writer’s intended meaning.

Writing Fiction:  A ‘talk for writing’ approach is used in EYFS and KS1 to support children in embedding narrative language, language patterns and conventions. This approach allows for a reduction in cognitive overload and vital development of children’s vocabulary and sentence structure skills.

Appropriate texts are used which include the identified grammatical features for children to learn orally then to imitate / innovate or use as a basis for an invention.
